Omar Alam is a self-proclaimed “hustler in touch with my inner gangster and star player” who was born in Chicago (really) and moved at 1 years old to Los Angeles, where he grew up. Omar’s internal entrepreneurial soul showed as a child when he created small neighborhood businesses and services selling custom made drawings, lawn care, while also hustling football and basketball rookie cards to classmates in school. Schools did not respect Omar’s business savvy, and counseled and sent home many for having ‘illegal enterprises on campus as a minor’ (yes). His family owned a laundromat, dry cleaners, and a beauty salon, which is where he worked and learned what business really is. It wasn’t too long before Omar learned that taking care of the customer is paramount, and that going the extra mile always brought them back into the store.
The computer craze hit and swept Omar where he learned about PC’s, Mac, Apple, programming languages, hardware, and networks. Omar maintained and ran various small ventures during the summers cleaning pools, delivering newspapers, and pickup sports games (football and basketball) to earn money to spend on more technology materials.
After 7 years in the risk management and technology consulting industries, Omar decided to re-apply his genetic family entrepreneurial instincts. Effortlessly outgoing and openly helpful, he was quickly drawn to online marketing, advertising, and social media because of its dynamic ability to reach people of all backgrounds and businesses of every sector. He started with small campaigns, blogs, media buys, videos, and articles to drive website traffic and soon had enough robust skills and information which led to the creation of The Matador Media very soon after.
In August of 2008, Omar launched The Matador Media, a daily video/word blog about online branding, social media, online media, personal and small business strategies. The motto is “bringing you to life online,” the show gives upfront, direct, easily genuine, and a “non-salesy” approach to very confusing and constantly changing subjects. As he grows his following and leaves his mark on clients with his way of being and transparent approach, Omar is making the world rethink how to do business, and showing businesses how to “be real”.
Omar’s knowledge and expertise was honed and perfected by joining related online conversations, becoming active in blogs and forums of all types, and then learning, applying in a business sense, all relevant and cutting edge social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, FF) to connect with others in his field and to truly understand the thinking of online consumers. Businesses and professionals soon noticed Omar’s refreshing and personable approach, which then lead to the landing of projects, consultations, and monthly service retainers.
Omar then wanted to follow that up by launching Omar Alam TV, where he hands out business advice and information on new cutting edge tech, online business trends, and packaged strategies for different professionals to use as a starting point. Omar is very passionate about his work and wants to help anyone he can whether it be with social media, online business strategy, reputation management, affiliate marketing advice, or just general business advice.
Omar’s extra large goals are to do the coin toss at a Super Bowl, take Virgin Galactic to outer space, and be the first to advertise on the moon. How many people can say that?
Omar is a graduate of the United States Air Force, he holds a BA in Business Administration and Management of Information Systems from San Jose State University, an AA in Business Administration, and a Masters Certificate in Project Management and Organizational Development.
When he isn’t busy launching a new business venture, studying new social media, or out enjoying his life, Omar enjoys spending time learning new languages, running, weight training, mixed martial arts, extreme fitness, helping friends become more healthy (fitness and wellness), traveling, and reading books from influential people. He feels that we should all do our part to make a positive impact, travel, enjoy life to the fullest, and follow in the footsteps of leaders who accomplished great acts that influenced millions.
Omar knows we may not all live forever, but we can create and have a legacy that lasts forever.
